August Meeting

posted Sep 3, 2014, 9:31 AM by Kansas City Climbing Community   [ updated Sep 8, 2014, 7:02 AM ]

Special thanks to Ibex Climbing Gym for hosting our August meeting! Also, thank you to Joe Cuda for suggesting, providing, and running the Knotty Games Tournament. If you didn't make it out (and even if you did), read on to get caught up on what's new with the KCCC.

With our logo competition complete, we now have new merchandise to spread your KCCC pride.

Membership Cards
Thanks to Rob's logo design, we will soon be getting swanky, new membership cards!

Coincidentally, the designer (Thomas Krempa) of the circle logo is also skilled at printing stickers! We are selling the stickers for $1 each, or one for free when you purchase/renew your membership.

Stickers! $1 each

Shirt design is ready! Pre-order your $21, Navy Blue, Polyester shirt at this link by September 22nd! Hopefully we'll have the shirts in time to pass them out on the Fall Trip in October. To pay for your shirt, either give cash or check to an officer, or pay via Pay Pal.

"24 Hours of Horseshoe Hell is an endurance rock climbing competition held annually on the last full weekend of September, within the steep sandstone cliff walls of Horseshoe Canyon Ranch, Jasper, AR.  Teams of two have the opportunity to choose between a 12 hour and 24 hour event, and the festival lasts a full 4 days with food, camping, music, swag, games, competition, and most of all fellowship." Last year, KCCC added to the fun by hosting a Slip N Slide as part of the post-climbing festivities. This year, WE NEED YOUR HELP setting up and tearing down the Slip N Slide. Setup will be on Saturday before lunch, and tear down will be on Sunday morning.  Thus far, Mary Ashley Rimmer and Liz Horsley have signed up.

If you've never been to Hell, I highly recommend going as a spectator! It's a super fun weekend with climbers from all over the US. This year Alex Honnold is coming back (he competed last in 2010 where he tried to turn in his score-card in the recreational division since the volunteer didn't know who he was). The KC area has many teams competing, so show up and support!

We asked members where they wanted to climb for the fall trip, and we got a myriad of responses! Options are pictured below, and voting is on the home page. Vote for the date, a weekend in October, as well!
Fall Trip Location Posibilities

I'll be hosting a few clinics in September (and maybe October). As always, Virginia is offering half-price entrance (only $5) and will keep the wall open until 10pm for extra climbing/learning:
Anchor Cleaning @ Monster Mountain, Wedenesday, September 10th 7-9pm
Anchor Rigging @ Monster Mountain, Wednesday, September 17th 7-9pm
Belaying from the Top @ Monster Mountain, TBD, October TBD 7-9pm
If there's a skill you'd like to see taught in a clinic, let me know!

As a fun activity for this meeting, we played a Knot-Tying game in tournament style. As the rounds thinned out the players, Jim Grace and I competed for the final knot, a French Bowline. Turns out, I'm the speediest knot-tie-er there ever was (or maybe I've tied that knot before to swing Girl Scouts from a bear bag line in Canada) and I won myself a copy of the game. Everyone won candy, because we reward participation. Thanks Joe Cuda for suggesting, and hosting, the Knot Game!

Friday, September 12th - Sunday, September 14th at Fern, AR.
The Fall Ladies' Trip is coming up! No experience necessary. We'll be heading to Fern in Arkansas for a weekend of sport, trad, and top rope. As usual, Saturday night dinner will be burrito bar with each participant providing a different ingredient. Make sure to SIGN UP!

Happy Climbing!
